Endotoxin and mycoplasma are Nature’s darkest secrets. If they are ever solved, Hell itself will open.

Lewis Thomas

Lewis Thomas spent much of his life studying endotoxin and reflecting literately on what he learned from that and myriad other experiences. I was a fellow, already seduced by the subject of endotoxin, when I heard him make the statement above on receiving the Kober Medal from the Association of American Physicians. I was tempted to rethink my research direction.

The hope is that this volume casts a new light on the core information about endotoxin relevant to clinical medicine by putting it together in a different way and that this will be useful to scientists and clinicians and everyone in between. The book is probably not close enough to solving the endotoxin riddle to risk unlocking the Gates of Hell. But it gives a pretty revealing look through the keyhole.
